Matisse Still Life. Henri Matisse (1869 - 1954) was a very famous French artist. When he was 21 years old he had appendicitis and his mother bought him his first box of paints to help him during recovery. This is when he discovered his love of art and decided to become a painter.

This piece represents everything that I love in his still life paintings. 🍋 🍋 🍋 The red background with the loosely painted wallpaper motif, and the use of the exact same color for the lower portion of the table contribute to the the abstraction here.

French artist Odilon Redon also painted notable still life during this period, especially flowers. Henri Matisse reduced the rendering of still-life objects even further 

He is also highly regarded as a sculptor. Accomplishments Matisse began painting still lifes and landscapes in the traditional style and then ultimately through his own experimentation. He spent a great deal of time at the Louvre copying works of art. Matisse’s painting evolved from the earlier days when he painted in darker tones and then his palette expanded to brighter colors.
