Richard Georg Strauss (11 June 1864 - 8 September 1949) was a leading German composer of the late Romantic and early modern eras. He is known for his operas, which include Der Rosenkavalier and Salome; his Lieder, especially his Four Last Songs; and his tone poems and other orchestral works, such as Death and Transfiguration, Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks, Also sprach Zarathustra, An Alpine Symphony, and Metamorphosen. Daphne is an opera in one act by Richard Strauss, his 13th opera, subtitled "A Bucolic Tragedy in One Act". The German libretto was by Joseph Gregor.

In three cases the recordings are the only studios recordings ever made of those operas (Intermezzo, Die Schweigesame Frau, Daphne). He avenged himself on Munich, the city of his birth, by composing the opera "Feuersnot," in which the reactionary burghers of Munich are deprived of fire (the warmth and brightness of creativity) by a noble magician named Kunrad (in reality Richard Strauss). In 1909 the opera Elektra marked Strauss’s first collaboration with the Austrian poet and dramatist Hugo von Hofmannsthal.

It’s hardly surprising that we are being treated to several new and reissued recordings of the operas of Richard Strauss, on CD, DVD and blu-ray and as downloads, as 2014 marks his 150 th anniversary.
